While I don't add bleach every time, it is not incompatible with the potable water concept. The clorine in the bleach is no different from what is added to most municipal water supplies. For myself, I run bleach solution through a couple times a year. Afterward I refill with plain water, run it through the faucet a bit to rinse, drain, and refill with plain water. Also, be sure to drain the tank between trips, as the nasties you are concerned about in your water are mostly killed by dry. We do use the tank water for drinking and cooking, and have never had a problem.
