Subject: Do the headlight relay upgrade!
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hello - My headlights went out 10 blocks from home a few nights ago. How many times has this happened to others I have read? So now it was my turn.

Fortunately the fog lights got me home.

I have square headlights on my 82 Vanagon, installed myself 6 years ago. A set of fog lights have helped when the lowbeams are on. Sometimes it has seemed that the lights were off, they are so dim. I like the look of the square headlights, but not the low beam light like most everyone else.

I have been reading about the headlight relays that Frank Condelli sells, so I decided that I would install this upgrade or at least improve the headlight grounds. I did'nt have the luxury of time- now without lights it was now or never. Now was the perfect time to upgrade.

A loose ground wire was to blkame for the lack of headlights. The connector was green and brittle rom corrosion.

I bought some good spade connectors and made a separate ground for each headlight. Then I got out some number 53 relays and relay plates I had saved, and with Frank's info, wired up the relays . I had to draw myself a diagram , which made it easier to understand. The results:

The headlights are now brighter. It is worth the effort- it took me a few hours.

Though I did'nt get the relays from Frank- a friend who saw mine wants to order them and bulbs- so- I'll be sending out a order soon.

45 watts for low beam is just too low! My advice is to check your headlight ground connections before you are stranded with no headlights. At least give each headlight a separate ground.
