Subject:      leaking head gasket?

For xmas I received a coolant leak at the head on the left side of my
'86  2.1 Westie.  I took the lower tin that hides the push rod tubes
down to take a close look for the source of the leak. The leak appears
almost immediately {hot or cold}when running the engine at  the gasket
in the center of the engine where the head joins the engine  However, I
think but unsure that the leak is migrating either from 1} further back
 along the gasket at  the site of the fourth piston or 2} an expansion
plug ? (wishful thinking} between the two rearmost  push rod tubes,again
at the fourth piston.
Any information on how to resolve this puzzle and solutions to repairing
the leak would be gratefully appreciated.
