My local VW repair shop routinly repairs head leaks without removing the engine from trhe car. He also fixes the head sealing surface with epoxy. He says that is a temporary repair, probably only good for a couple years. (He is not that sure how long it lasts, as he says that he has not yet had to fix one again) He has a lot of low buck customers, and needs to inexpensively keep their cars on the road.
