I have to disagree about the route from Bangor. If you run the interstate to Bangor and then Rt.9 to Calais you're missing some of Maine's most magnificent scenery. Much better off taking the interstate to Brunswick, then Rt.1 to Rt.90 back to Rt.1. When you get to Ellsworth you should detour to Acadia National Park. However, continuing toward Calais you'd take Rt.182 from Ellsworth to Cherryfield then back to Rt.1 to Machias then Rt.192 to Calais. A terrific combination of coastal, woods, and mountain scenery. Takes about an hour and a half longer than going interstate to Bangor and worth every minute.
