Hi Tim, our 1995 EVC had the same problems and later (after resolving the issue) I had noticed the vanagons use what appears to be the same mechanism. Order a new locking mechanism and swap it out between all the doors till your problems is fixed. In my case I replaced the drivers door thinking it had the most use, turned out a week later I was getting the same problem, I moved the new mechanism to the passenger door and the problem is resolved.

There should be 4 wires coming off of the mechanism... one wire is a synchronizing wire. It talks to all the locks, if one lock lags behind just a little then the locks relock themselves. Another way to solve the problem is disconnect this synchronizing wire from all the locks. Someone on the Eurovan/Vanagon list posted on this but I forgot.
