I'll way in on this thread now.

The stock radios aren't very deep. To support the rear of them, there is a hanger strap from the top of the dash. This hanger strap is easily pushed out of the way. When pushed out of the way, a depth of 7 1/2 inches ( I believe) can be accommodated with standard DIN units.

What can not be handled are the longer in dash DVD units (which required a bit over 8 inches of depth.) Standard CD in dash units aren't a problem. (I've put 2 into my Vanagons, and will probably replace a 3rd one soon.)

FWIW, I suggest whatever model you get, get it with a remote control. At first glance it seems a silly extravagance, but after a while, you realize just how much better it is to be able to drive and not have to lean over to change stations/modify the volume, etc.
