I just called Newfoundland/Labrador tourism (1-800-563-nfld) and they said that the Labrador road from Cartwright to Blac Sablon in Quebec, is now operational, and year round road.

So if you want a really nice "East Coast Safari" circuit (no back- tracking) trip, then one can drive up from the St. Lawrance seaway Quebec town of Baie-Comeau to Goose Bay (do the Gaspe Penn. in Quebec while you're there). Then a short ferry ride from Goose Bay to the coast town of Cartwright then drive down the coast (well sort of along the coast) of Labrador from Cartwright to the Lab-Quebec border town of Blac Sablon and then a short ferry ride over to Newfoundland town of St. Barbe then around Newfy and the ferry back to Cape Bretton in NS, and back home via the Yarmouth, NS ferry to Maine. This is a loop trip and would be very interesting. Get GOOD maps before you leave, and be prepared for bugs.

URL for NFLD/Lab is:

Baie-Comeau, Quebec jumping off point URL map is:
