I'll chime in here, since I've done this on a syncro westy as well.  By the
way, I will be writing a tech article on this installation in the near
future for the Volks Cafe website.

I used the lift kit and the Load Controller II compressor system.  You do
not need the compressor, but you are supposed to maintain a minimum of 5PSI
in the air bags at all times to avoid wear on them.  The compressor systems
have a low pressure switch that will kick on the compressor automatically if
they fall below 5PSI.  Also the load controller II has independent gauges
and fill capability for each side, so you can put more pressure in one side
than the other (i.e. the left side on a westy).  You can also do this with
just air bags.

In my article I'll write up all the details of the installation, compressor
placement, gauge placement, etc.  Should be ready in a few weeks.
