I have dome some more checking with Tourism Newfoundland/Labrador (1-800-563-6353) and I have found out that the train that goes from Quebec's (north side of the St. Laurence seaway) town of Sept-ILes, nearly straight north 350 kilometres up to Ross Bay junction, where the train crosses the road that goes from (again the north side Quebec town of) Baie-Comeau (Bay-Como) to Labrador's Goose Bay, Happy Valley ....... whew ..... this train does NOT take autos.

This train does take passengers and if one does NOT want to to this loop trip via van, but does want to see the wilderness, one could tour Quebec's Gaspe peninsula and then take a ferry from Matane (Gaspe Penn., Quebec) north across the St. Laurence to Baie- Comeau, drive east along the north shore of the St. Laurence and take the train up and back and then continue on your way. Get as much info as you can prior to even planning this.

Also tourism Quebec is 1-800-363-777. If you don't speak French, they will use English to speak with you. If you do call Tourism Quebec, be sure to ask for the road map for "Quebec's Far North" as most maps do not cover this northern part of Quebec's roads.

Also for any of you even reading this, you may be serious in doing this trip. If you are, I'd urge you get information NOW to aid in your planning. Call the 1-800 # for each state and province, get all of the AAA maps that you can and read the Lonely Planet guide books for each state and province that you plan to visit. Mark each place that sounds interesting and after a while your trip will plan itself. At least that's what we do.

I hope that this will be of some help to somebody. Malcolm (Halifax)
