OK, I'll bite. When I go to the Fram site, they list the same filter for both. Guess I do wonder how many listees use Fram, Mahle, K&N, etc. As I said, I switched to K&N and found the filter listed for '00 Jetta III, which is the engine I have. It is my $$ and I am taking my risks. Thanks for the concern. Bob

The CORRECT filter for the inline engine IS DIFFERENT.

Tiico and most VW inline engines use Mann # W719/5, Mahle/Knecht OC47 (or use the newest upgrade long-life filter, can't remember the new #))

Waterboxer uses Mann W719/12 or Mahle/Knecht OC108

These ARE different filters, with different placement and relief pressure of the valving.

Maybe the lesser filter makers don't recognize this, but then you are doing your engine a disservice by using inferior filters. Just because a filter 'fits' does not mean it is correct! Do as you wish, it's your van, your money.

They're actually the same! I just switched to K&N when I started putting them on the Jetta motor. Misstatement on my part. Bob

Hmm. I use the standard Vanagon oil filter on my Tiico. Fits fine and I had several in my inventory (still got a couple from a good deal I got a couple of years ago at a VW dealer in Staunton Virginia.)
