I once had the same problem with a 2WD Sunroof van. The valley formed into the top of the tank was rusted through. If the van has seen much time on salted roads, brace yourself for this possibility. Should you need a replacement fuel tank, try to find a good used one. An original Vanagon fuel tank will, after many years, rust from the outside in, whereas the aftermarket junk will quickly rust from the inside out.
