The +5 signal wire must have been shorted to another wire with (undoubtedly +12v) serious current supply. FI supply wire maybe?

Sounds right (my '84 has the double-switch arrangement).

Correct. All it should do is ground the +5 signal line to the ECU. Obviously that line has found a more potent source...

Not to be gloomy, but it's possible that the +12 has fried the input circuit in the ECU...dunno what overvoltage tolerance it has.
