Hi,

I had a problem that sounds similar. When filling right up, fuel would spill all over the ground from somewhere under the van and would go on leaking for a long time after that.

It was a complicated little breather/return pipe thing on top of the tank - one of its plastic end-fittings had gone hard and cracked, so when I was trying to fill up to the neck of the filler pipe, this was all running out below.

Had to send to VW in Sydney for the part, and the first time, they sent one for a Golf (?Rabbit) by mistake, so this must be a fairly common VW fuel tank breather/return apparatus.

When the right one came, it was an easy fit, working with the van on the hoist.
