Chuck, I jumpered what I believe to be the plug for the idle switch. It is a two wire connection, one of which should deliver (only) 5 volts or so from the ECU and the other of which goes to a ground on the left head. Unless there's a resistor in series with the switch behind the socket, there's no reason I can see why it should have fried the wires. David Beirel speculated that the circuit may have picked up 12 volts from a short or bad wire someplace. I'll investigate before I put the juice back to it.

Just to clarify, the "socket" is the connector for a two wire circuit from the throttle switch and is permanently mounted to the top of the right side of the engine. The "plug" (where I applied the short) was removed from the socket at the time.
