Never fear. He didn't give you enough information. You need to be a member or a guest of that particular website and that apparently requires a password.

The directions he posted may work for him while he's logged in, but no combination of logical user names or passwords worked.

Have you thought about a 22RE conversion? I can imagine the torque from that 2.4Liter Toyota would work well with the vanagon power requirements. seems like the engine might be a bit tall though.
