Dangers? It all depends on who you believe, a bunch of pencil-necked geek scientists or Rush Limbaugh. Nowadays, most HVAC types are keen on refrigerant recovery. For a modest fee, they will recover the refrigerant for you. Just don't let them do you the "favor" of keeping it. Considering the high price of R-12, if enough remains in your system you should be able to make a few bucks on the deal.
