That depends on what you mean by easy. You don't need any special tools; compressed air is handy for testing and for blowing out passages. You have to be organized, patient and clean. You need the Bentley of course, but I found that even more useful info was found in the Bentley for Rabbit, Scirocco, Jetta 1980 -1984. I did the AT in my 84 a few years ago and it was the first AT I had attempted. Clutches, bands, and seals cost me a lot at the dealer; you should try to find a cheaper supplier for parts. The seal between the AT and the final drive is said to be a weak point and should probably be replaced, as well as the one at the torque converter.
