I'm having a similar problem with my '82 diesel.  At 55 mph there's a loud
resonant drone.  It disappears below 50 or above 60.  At first I thought
it was my exhaust, which resembled a lace doily more than solid metal.
But now I've got the whole thing replaced with the stock system, and I
still have the same noise.  (It's quieter at all other speeds, though.)  I
do still have a small leak at the muffler joint I need to fix with some
sealer, but it doesn't seem like enough to cause this much noise.

Is this one of the cabinets sounding off?  Do I just need to stuff a
sleeping bag in the right one?  Or is it because I'm missing the air
intake snorkel?  I assume there's supposed to be one, all I've got is an
opening on the air cleaner cover that looks like something should be
attached to it.
