The diesel camper is a noisy machine, but with that being said; my camper was missing the rubber hose/bellow that bridges the gap from the air cleaner to the air snorkel in the side wall of the van. It did make a difference overall to the point where it is more manageable- at least I can carry on a conversation now if I speak up. I ordered mine new from vw a few years back and I can't remember the price but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. I think it's worth a try to replace or improvise a replacement hose.
