Definitely head down to Bavaria.  I spent three years down in Garmisch
working for the army as a civilian.  You have to go to Munich.
Transportation museum is great as is the BMW museum and the Marienplatz.
Dachau is a must, even though it is a downer.  Check out Ludwigs castles in
the area as well.  April will be a bit early for hiking except maybe the
Kramer which has a nice hut up the hillside about an hour where you can grab
a beer and a meal.  You can also take a tram up to the top of the Zugspitze
from the Eibsee or take the train from Garmisch or one up and the other
down.  Old Partenkirchen is good for a meal in one of the old Gasthof's.
Garmisch was also the sight of the the first winter Olympics with Hitler in
attendance.  The Partnachklamm is a gorge you can walk thru and in winter is
great with all the ice formations.  Oberammergau is also a good stop on the
way to Neuswanstein and Linderhof,  two of Ludwig's castles.  If you can get
over to Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, they are great too.  By the way, my
personal favorite Hefeweizen is Karg from Murnau, a village between Munich
and Garmisch.  Have one for me!
