Neil, I just went through the very same thing and finally got it fixed. What really prompted me into finding and fixing the problem was the tach needle started doing a similar thing. Sticking between 2000 ~ 3000 rpm. I finally took the pod off and took the two meters out of the pod by removing the four screws that hold each one in place. No need to remove the electrical film, just let the gauges hang on to them but be careful in manipulating so as not to break or damage the film. Best is to do one meter at a time. I suspected that the bushing for the needle shafts were where the problem was so I lubricated them with a very judiciously placed drop or two of light lubricant, like Release-All or Fluid Film or 3 in 1. DO NOT USE WD 40. Clean the inside of the pod with Windex, Kleenex and compressed air if you can while your in there and also the face of the gauges. You'll be a happy camper afterwards. No more noise from the speedo and no more sticking needles !
