My Syncro had a similiar idle problem before it quit running altogether last
week. So did a friends 87 Wolfsburg.
It started out as a rough idle. Now, it won't even start.
I haven't been driving it , and so it could be from sitting.
I have the Bosch fuel injection book,
where under pulsed injection troubleshooting,there is a troubleshooting
chart for cold start, rough idle, no start, etc.  Since the Bentley does'nt
have a troubleshooting section, so this book needed if you are tring to
understand Digifant.

Now I just need to read it and perform some of the tests.
I have no choice- neither of our Vanagons run well enough to make it to a
shop-

One thing I noticed is that my idle stabilzer valve is buzzing loud- that
could be a place to start. Of course, the idle stabilizer control unit,
behind the right tailite, can also be defective.

My Vanagon ran perfect- so did your's and Mike's-could we be in the  Vanagon
triangle?
