A coworker of mine who was in the Navy called this a "koosh test". You drop it over the side, and if it goes "koosh" when it hits the water, it must be defective. He said this was a common way of handling persickety high-tech black boxes from aircrat that had a tendancy to come back with a note saying "could not duplicate problem" when sent in for repairs.
