Midway between front and back is right about where the fuel pump and fuel filter is. Did yuo actually crawl under and look, or just look under from the side? If there ws a leak from the the fuel lines around the filter or pump, you umay perceive it as a leak from the frame beam. The pump and filter are hidden behind that, and you can't see them unless you get right under the van. As far as I know, no gas lines run inside the frame beam. I speak from experience with my aircooled, van, but as far as I know the fuel delivery sytem is the same on water cooled vans. Get this dealt with fast. Leaking gas is an accident waiting to happen.

I've just dealt with a complete fuel tank, pump, and filter replacement, so let me know if you have any questions. I may be able to offer some advice.
