Frank- I always read Frank's posts-

Here's my observation : Wise move to switch to the DK. But, until you put in the 3A you won't go like a rocketship.

I replaced my DZ trans when I put in the 1.8 in 1995. The tires were 185 14. This made it OK- but a cross US trip made me realize I either needed a 5 speeed trans or more displacement.

So in 98 I swapped the 1.8 for a 2.0 ABA. In my opinion, for the heavy Westfalia(mine weighs 4700 lb), the 1.8 is not enough uless you trick it out. A lot cheaper to swap to a 93-98 Golf-Jetta ABA (or the Audi 3A)block.

You'll find that once you have the 3A, the DK trans will make more sense. And you'll get better gas mileage. For now if you go to smaller rims and tires, you'll pick up some acceleration.

Robert 1982 Westfalia

>From: Frank Grunthaner:In the course of all this I had instructed Strictly >German to swap in the DK trans. I reasoned that this would let me checkout the trans independently from the Audi turbo package. They did so, and I now have a 1.8L 8V Digifant engine with AMS chip driving a DK trans with 215/75 x 15 Yokohama Geolanders, trying to muscle around a 5300 pound Westfalia.>>
