They make two versions of that regulator -- with one of them the vent points forward, and with the other it points up (unless you rotate the regulator so the adjusting screw is hidden). The vent definitely must be kept clear (as must the tiny hole somewhere in the first-stage section). I used the up-pointing version, and used aluminum body tape to tape over the end of the cover so things couldnt' drop on it directly from above. Might make sense to do something similar with the forward-pointing one. That said, the single mudflap seems to keep things remarkably clean in that area. david
