Whenever these lights are flickering, the battery voltage is greater than the alternator output voltage. In my experience, the likely cause is that the alternator brushes are worn out. Although the alternator tests good on the bench, once it is heat soaked during operation the alternator case expands enough to reduce the contact pressure of the worn-out, and obviously very short brushes. Replace the brushes. If you are adept enough, you can replace just the brushes at a cost of probably $5 as opposed to changing the regulator/brush assembly in toto. George |
