Try trading out your ECU with a known good one.

This was the symptom that my Golf was showing when they diagnosed it as a faulty ECU at the VW shop here.

Apparently the warm engine (or even just warm summer temperatures) does not require such intense FI adjustments to be made by the Digifant system... the car can run.

However, as soon as it is cold, and your temp sensors are sending important data to the ECU.... that is when the idle needs some help from the computer.
