Vanagon lifter syndrome.

Common on the WBX engine. Will happen to the best of them, especially if they have been allowed to sit idle for any length of time. It can be eliminated most of the time with the Mann or Mahle oil filters and Marvels Mystery Oil in the crankcase, but not likely if it's been sitting a long time. Kinda inevitable then. But it will correct itself shortly after warming up and running a while. Just don't push the engine until the clatter is gone, because you are after all running it with the valve train clearances being out of tolerance temporarily.
