Matt,

I think you'd be better off taking your $1100 (this is new $$, not a refund?) and going to a reputable VW engine rebuilder/machine shop (as opposed to a service shop) and having an engine rebuilt and then install it again yourself.

I see it as a separate issue from the first work order, how you resolve that is up to you. I just would hate to see you throw good money after bad.

As someone else stated, having them do it will put you and your vehicle in jeapordy. I can just imagine what little things might "accidentally" happen while they're working on it, and how the price will creep up.

It sounds like, from your description, the engine they showed you was A) corroded from before and therefore not a good rebuild candidate to begine with, or B) not your engine. My $$ is on B. Your motor is probably still together in some sh*t pile in the back room.

The argument they're giving you doesn't match the symptoms, i.e. "wrong" coolant doesn't cause zero compression. Even running straight water the whole time wouldn't corrode that badly in that short of time.

Again I'd look for a machine shop that specializes in VW, especially flat fours, it's a common specialty.

My other car is a Lancia Beta Zagato, and it also leaks a bit of oil (just a bit) after I resealed it myself. They're just like that, heh heh. :^)
