Duh. I never said use a VW tranny. I said:

"I'm not sure if they're available for Vanagon trannies, but I used Hewland gears in a '79 VW 090 transmission hooked up to a 3.0 liter 911 engine in my race car for years and never had a transmission related failure. Worth looking into."

Damn! This is painfull.
