Subject: Should I buy this 91 Vanagon GL--Will it bring me happiness and
              joy?
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

I have the opportunity to buy a 1991 Vanagon GL. Body is rust free. good rubber, paint is in fine shape, and the interior is clean (missing the armrest on the driver's left side, though.)The head gaskets were replaced in Feb of 2002 at the local VW dealership. I took the van into a local privately owned VW shop and he did a pre-buy inspection. He said the engine is in good shape, compression in all 4 cylinders is 150. The owners have all the maintenance records and it has been serviced continuously by the dealership where it was purchased those many years ago...

Anyway -- I need transportation (my camry exploded) and I have always thought about getting vanagon. I really like the whole idea behind the vehicle and it's simple utilitarian design. This vanagon has 127k and the owner is asking 5900. I'm in the pacific NW. Can I expect to get reliable service out of this vehicle, or am I condeming myself to a downward spiral of repair bills and a vehicle I love but hate? P.S. The wife unit would be very disappointed if I bought a car that went into the shop a month after I bought it!

Any words of encouragement or warning would be GREATLY appreciated!

Jed.
