It will be indeed a spiral.

But so is everything else in life... marriage... kids... used cars.

Doesn't have to be a "downward" spiral though. I have an '87 and have had many years of great driving experiences, and no major ugliness... sure, some minor problems, but you will get that in any used car you buy. If you are a person who enjoys learning about the various systems which control the vehicle, and can understand basic electrical concepts, etc... then you should be just fine. There is a lot of luck involved too in owning a Vanagon.

I say get it, as these vehicles are actually collectors items. The 1991 model year is the last of them. If you do not like the Vanagon way of life, you can always sell it later (although once you own one, be careful... you will probably NEVER be able to live without one again).
