Sorry, there are 4 ports, not 3.

The two ports on the bottom of the unit are Fresh Air input for combustion, and Exhaust. On the side is the heated output. What is >NOT< obvious is that the input for heated air is through the mesh grating (which also provides for cooling of the internal electrical components.

This design is to prevent CO from combustion being mixed with the heated air. it does recirculate the heated air.

The bluebird pages show a slightly different model from that which I got from Westy Ventures, in that the recirculated air intake is a separate external opening rather than through the mesh grating. The reason for not mounting on its side has to do with that being where the intake is for the heated air.
