Volks,
I didn't do it. Honest. I was off on a boat ride and it wasn't me. It was
someone else.
Who are you going to believe, Da Bomb - an obvious alias for someone with
shall we say, an agenda? Or me, trustworthy me? See easy choice even if
she does have pictures.
First the get together was pretty cool, uh, warm, which is why I drove the
umpteen million miles to get there...to get out of the fog/rain in
Sacramento. The organizers actually organized. Hmmm. Maybe if I'd done
that BurningVan would have been even more successful? Naw. Can't top
perfection. Anyway they did a great job.
Last bus count I saw was 230 and there were more, including a prototype of a
double cab from 1956 or so, decorated in rust. I had no idea there had been
that many different kinds of busses made. One of them was huge! I think
the model was Bluebird? Anyway much the biggest VW I've ever seen. People
from all over were there including a friendly Canadian [is that redundant?]
and some guy from Maryland - more on that later. Lake Havasu city is a
weird combination of retirement and tacky theme park, perfect for Bus folks.
They had drawings, several of them, that went on for hours! Never been to a
drawing where they gave away a complete engine before. And a gas tank. And
so much other stuff they were combining stuff to give away. Last I heard Da
Bomb hadn't gotten anything, except lots of laughs/a boat
ride/food/drinkables and other such stuff. There were either many really
great parties or one really great large party. I hung around Da Bomb's area
of operation and marveled. She has neat friends but I sagged out early on
account of senility or something like that. In the middle of the night I
noticed the glare of magnesium burning just to the north of me. Shades of
BurningVan, except for the magnesium of course.
It was warm and friendly out down there, most nice indeed. Westyman and
Perky were there [I can't use their real names for fear of retaliation but
he has a diesel powered Westy syncro hint hint]. And as far as I know the
four of us represented the list. Nobly I might add. Not one of us was
arrested, or at least not convicted, or none of the convictions held up on
appeal.
I got to go at the last minute and that's my major joy with the van. Hop in
and go. Much fun.
Mike
