The engine numbers on VW engines have two letter prefix. The CV is exclusively used on 80-83 Air Cooled Vanagon Engines. Other Type IV 2000 cc VW Air Cooled Engine (AW, ED, GD, GE series) will bolt right in to a Vanagon but are not the right engine. True they are all 2000cc but seeing one of those NOT CV series engines in an 80-83 Air Cooled Van has always resulted in a Junk Bin engine when I've disassembled them. I'm sure that 1.9 / 2.1 Waser boxers use some form of engine number prefix that tells you its the proper engine for that specific year model, but I sold my Bentley door stop book and don't know what they are.
