This question comes up every couple of months. First off, the Syncros
have the gas tank in the rear (not the front as with 2wd Vanagons) this
is to make room for the front differential. So if you were going to do
the conversion you are talking about
1) Removing existing gas tank.
2) Installing rear gas tank.
3) Installing rear gas tank filler (cutting hole into the rear right
pillar).
4) Installing transaxles (front and rear), drive shaft and skid plates.
5) Installing differential lock switch (assuming your particular Syncro
has that feature.)
6) Installing front axles/rotors, etc.
And then plugging the hole where the original gas tank inlet is. And
I'm sure there will be all sorts of other miscellaneous things pop up
(redoing the fuel lines at a minimum, but also running new wire for the
fuel gauge.)
Seems like a bunch of work for minimal gain .
