I've been thinking about BIG brakes to stop my soon to be 1.9L ALH TDI Syncro project with 30" tall tires. The bigger the tire the more braking you need to get the 2000+ kg stopped. I have been tossing around the idea of going a few steps better than the South African kit by using Wilwood Dynalite II 4-piston billet aluminium callipers. These callipers are found on race cars there are several companies using these for aftermarket brakes on street cars as well. These callipers designed to dissipate heat and deliver consistent BIG time clamping force. I am going to be working with a local tuner who makes these for most other Audi and Volkswagen models. Their Audi kit sells for $795 USD and has the following specs which will be the same as the Vanagon Syncro specs when we are finished as the bolt pattern and hub design is very similar: - Brembo 11.0" (280mm) cross drilled brake rotors. - Goodridge stainless braided brake lines. - CNC machined anodized aluminum brackets. - Wilwood Dynalite II 4-piston billet aluminum callipers. - EBC 'Green Stuff' pads. - Grade 8 hardware Before I dive into this project I would like to know if there is anyone who would be potentially interested in going to this setup of brakes? The R+D necessary to make this work for the Vanagon Syncro isn't cheap! All parts are available here in North America so getting things like pads and new rotors should be a lot easier than getting the South African parts.
