The Type IV temp sensors I've installed have had a variety of big steel washers on them or copper washers on them. I bought several new ones from variety of sources and I can't remember if they came with copper washers or not. The two I have in my spare parts box have thin copper washers on them. (That doesn't mean that they belong there on twenty year old cars.) It sure looks like a washer that you can get in the faucet washer repair parts bins at ACE hardware. I can't say that it would make any difference in the performance of the sender other than to hold the sheet metal down. The one on my 83 Air Cooled Westy doesn't have a washer and it hasn't for the last 150K but it has run pretty good all those miles.
