Good info but not applicable to air-cooled or some early water-cooled models (diesel), AFAIK. The air/heater control box was changed during the 1983 model year to a much improved design. I have put later boxes into 82 water-cooled models to great benefit but I can't speak for what can be done for air-cooled ones. The early models have a troublesome upper lever that often won't stay in the far right defrost position. Waterboxer people know only the improved type.
