Ok, BD912 (15-amp rating vs 4 amps) comes in a TO-220 case with pinout BCE, crosses to NTE332 with same case and pinout...no opinion as to whether it's a good replacement for the 438 -- but very possible depending on the source (Mark Drillock or Darrell Boehler for example). Again, I haven't even glanced at the electrical characteristics of any of them.
