Drivers can borrow Newfoundland phones

Friday, January 24, 2003 – Print Edition, Page A8

St. John's -- The Newfoundland and Labrador government will lend satellite telephones to motorists who plan to drive the isolated Trans-Labrador Highway.

The 500-kilometre highway is little more than a two-lane gravel road with only one community, Churchill Falls, about midway and no cellphone service. The government said Wednesday that a pilot project will begin within a few months, allowing motorists to pick up the phones from the police for a fee before heading out.
