Hi Ben great article. Now I need more help. I got 4 brand new CVs & from what I read in your article all 4 were put together wrong at the manufacturer. They are GKN Automotive Lobro made in Germany CVs

Maybe I am wrong on the telling which side of the ball cage has the greater chamfer. The way I see it the greater chamfer is flat then angled some then flat 90 deg. from the top flat piece so there are 3 surfaces. The other side has only 2 surfaces Thake a look at the pics on the below page. http://wind.prohosting.com/~tgbwcoke/cvjoint.jpg

Also I take it when you say away from the axle you mean the ring on the outer ball hub is closer to the drum or the tranny. Hope I made sense. Mike >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Good morning everyone, My first tech article is now available on the Volks Cafe website, covering CV joint diagnosis, maintenance and replacement. From the home page, look for it under "New Items", or use this link: http://volkscafe.com/articles/cvarticle/cvarticle.html.

It is quite lengthy and detailed, and I'd love any and all feedback. The next article, which covers oil pressure diagnosis and treatment as well as OP gauge installation, will be out later this week.

Thanks and have a good read! tx, bmc :) Ben McCafferty ben@volkscafe.com
