Oh I know how to read the VIN, I just didn't bother since it was built 11/90.

See the later post by "Ari Ollikainen", he explained why my '91 is considered a '90.

Your VIN should look something like this: WV2ZB0257LHxxxxxx assuming it is a US-spec 1990 GL Camper. The 10th position is the model year code (L for 1990, M for 1991).

Vanagon.com has VIN info here: http://www.vanagon.com/info/vin/, but I can't vouch for its accuracy.
