Not sure what year Wrangler you are refering to but I've owned a 80' CJ-7 with a hardtop and a 97 Wrangler with a hardtop, both of which had the top removed every summer and neither leaked, and neither had RTV. Both were noisy but no more than my syncro with AT's.
