I could be wrong here... but I always learned that applying any sticky
substance to a "fan belt" can really screw things up in there.

We always used the parrafin wax trick, or sprayed belt dressing (which I
still do not really know what is in there), or used a bar of good hard soap.

The belt, when you buy it new, I believe, has a coating on it, on the pulley
side, which allows it to gracefully slip a bit when necessary... and not to
squeal.

I have no idea what the results would be if you applied any sticky or
gluelike substance onto the belt... but it sounds strange to me, and I would
not do it until learning from a few "experts" otherwise.
