Often the intermittent operation is caused by poor contacts on your bulb holders. Give the bulb holders a little twist in their respective holders and it normally removes enough of the oxidation to render them functional. I believe your shift indicator has a different problem, probably just a poor ground. This is a common problem with VWs, sometimes it appears that they just fix themselves but consider this as temporary and go ahead and clean the connectors. If you have any visible corrosion you can use a pencil eraser to clean the contact points on your instrument cluster printed circuit foil.
