As suggested by a list member the intermittent power window problem was
indeed a broken wire inside the driver door boot routing wires to the dash.

I'm happy to say that when I cut open the boot, the broken wire was on the
outside of the bundle dangling from a last vestige of yellow wire rubber
shielding. This is why the problem was intermittent. When squeezed together
it worked. When slightly apart of course no contact.

Soldering the wires together was a bear. Wires were dirty and flux and
sanding almost did not do the job. I had to overkill with torch heat to get
the wires hot enough to accept solder. Had this not worked I would have then
crimped the job. I probably should have gone this route as a first choice.

Taped the yellow wire with yellow electrical tape and taped the black boot
together with black electrical tape. Windows now work like new.

Thanks for the tip that helped me to identify the problem. Luckily by
pinching the boot and moving it side to side I was able to determine the
problem was inside. I was ready to test each wire in the bundle but lady
luck was on my side today with the outside yellow wire clearly broken.
