I have a Vanagon with an inline 4 cyl. running a CIS fuel system. The Vanagon pump puts out plenty of pressure. As for a check valve you "may" need it. What I found is the system bleads the pressure down to zero the minute it is turned off. The problem becomes when you let the vehicle sit. Restarting in a day or so, no problem. After a few days of sitting enough fuel has drained back to the tank enough that it will not start until it has been cranked for maybe 20 seconds.
